Week 2 EOC: Boston Consulting Group- Video Games

Week 2 EOC: Boston Consulting Group- Video Games

Video game and their systems has been on the top of every child and young adult’s list for home entertainment since the early 80’s. With the rapid advancement in technology and the growing demand, it is hard not to find a home without some kind of game system.  According to Kotaku’s editor Luke Plunkett, “ Nintendo DS has sold 43.1 million units, PS3 sold 13.5 million, Wii with 30.4 million, and Xbox 360 sold 21.9 million”(http://kotaku.com/5688144/so-how-many-consoles-have-been-sold-in-the-us-this-generation).  Even with these astounding figures, video game industry has taken a dive since March of  2012, and in my opinion it will only get worst.  I’ve put together a BCG analysis of the video game market with an  explanation of  why I chose their category.
For the Xbox, I put the company in the cash cow box. Bill Gates predicts the disc-free Xbox 360 with no HD DVD, and no Blu-Ray. He states “it will be 10 times better in terms of the visual realism, the speed, and the depth of what you can do” (http://www.xb360info.com/xbox/news/184) .  With Gates vision, the popular Kinect,  and the ever so popular Xbox Live, the system should maintain its place in the gaming world. Popular video games like Modern Warfare 3,  Skyrim,  and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will  ensure that .
The PlayStation 3 is definitely dog status. There is nothing new and exciting about this company.  They are maintaining their prices on the system, and if it wasn’t for the built in Blu-Ray player, no one would even want one.  Sony is also in bankruptcy troubles with it’s declining sells in its products  and no innovating ideals for the company.
As for the Nintendo Wii, I am going to have to put that in the question mark category.  Columnist  Richard George said “ Sales are down. Game releases are at an all time low. With the only  The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword on the horizon, and almost nothing else announced for  North America, what’s next (http://www.ign.com/articles/2011/03/08/nintendo-wiis-future-is-strong)?  What’s next is Nintendo needs to hurry up and bring out the Wii U system before Wii forget about them.
Games that is downloaded to your smart phone and IPads is put into the star box. Just about everyone has a smart phone or an IPad these days and by purchasing these games and downloading it to your device is  easy and very convenient. These games are very inexpensive  and  can contain the same level of  graphics, fun, and entertainment.
